Tumescent Procedures -FAQ

What is the definition of the word tumescent?

  • The word tumescent means swollen and firm.

What is tumescent liposuction?

  • The word tumescent refers to anything that is swollen and firm. In the tumescent technique for liposuction, a large volume of very dilute solution of local anesthesia (lidocaine and epinephrine) is infiltrated (injected) into the fat beneath the skin, causing the targeted area to become tumescent, in other words, swollen and firm. The local anesthetic lidocaine in the tumescent solution provides such complete local anesthesia, that it eliminates the need for general anesthesia, or IV sedation. The drug epinephrine (adrenalin) provides profound localized vasoconstriction that it virtually eliminates surgical bleeding during tumescent liposuction. By eliminating the risks of general anesthesia and the risks of excessive surgical bleeding, the tumescent technique for liposuction totally by local anesthesia has eliminated the greatest dangers associated with the older forms of liposuction.

Does liposuction produce permanent results?

  • After liposuction, the new body’s shape is more or less permanent. If a patient does gain a moderate amount of weight after liposuction, then the figure will simply be a larger version of the new body shape. Fat cells that are removed by liposuction do not grow back. If the patient does not gain excessive amounts of weight, then the new more pleasing silhouette is permanent. Of course after liposuction, the clock keeps ticking, and advancing age will produce the usual changes in the shape of the body associated with the aging process. Nevertheless, the benefits of liposuction will always be apparent.

BOTOX® FAQ

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic used for?

  • BOTOX® diminishes or eliminates so-called dynamic wrinkles in the face. BOTOX® Cosmetic acts by paralyzing the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into the muscle and prevents the muscle from contracting by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscle. Because the muscle cannot contract, the wrinkle relaxes.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is mainly used to treat dynamic wrinkles in the upper third of the face. However, many physicians use it to cosmetically treat other areas of the face and neck. Moreover, BOTOX® Cosmetic has also been used to treat migraine headaches and even excessive underarm sweating.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is not as effective on so-called static wrinkles. Static wrinkles are better treated surgically or with dermal fillers.
